About The Mummy MOT

A Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal examination for women following both vaginal and caesarean deliveries. It will assess how your posture, pelvic floor muscles and stomach muscles are recovering after birth. And if they’re not, then we can provide you with exercises and treatment to help in your recovery and to return to exercise safely.

WHO NEEDS A MUMMY MOT?

Every pregnancy and delivery is different, but one thing that is common to all women are the amazing changes our bodies make to accommodate the development and arrival of a baby.  Whilst the physical changes are obvious to see, it’s often the changes within that are quietly ignored. Over 50 % of women will have difficulty with their pelvic floor and abdominal muscles that persists past 8 weeks.  This can lead to a reduction in core control, resulting in back and hip pain, bladder and bowel issues and a general loss of confidence in our bodies. These changes can be recent, or frequently something you have been putting up with for a considerable period of time.

HOW DOES IT HELP?

A Mummy MOT assessment is the perfect opportunity to identify any issues and discuss concerns you may have.  Prior to your appointment you will receive a comprehensive pre-appointment questionaire to complete.  Gathering this information ahead of your appointment helps shine the light on areas where you may need help, this allows us to hit the ground running in addressing your specific concerns. For some women an assessment is all they need to get them on the right path but for many, a few sessions of focused work alongside a bespoke home program that fits into busy Mum life is required.

During your appointmemt your posture, back, hip and pelvis is assessed along with checks on your abdominals, perineal tears, C-section scar and of course your pelvic floor. This normally includes an internal examination, but this is not essential if you decide not to. You are also welcome to bring along a chaperone. A bespoke post-natal recovery program can then be devised especially for your lifestyle and fitness goals.  This will include specific and safe post-natal exercises to regain stability and optimum function.

Finding time in our busy lives is tricky, especially when it involves juggling childcare.  Our online diary makes it easy to arrange an appointment when it suits you best. You are very welcome to bring small babies along to your appointment but this can prove distracting for Mums!
